At the annual ceremony, which marks the anniversary of the June 8, 1917, disaster in Butte that killed 168 men, Gordon said his great-grandfather, Con O’Neill, was a foreman who lived on site at the mine. Though his great-grandfather wasn’t working in the mine the day of the disaster, he rushed into it to save his men when he heard of the fire.

Secretary of the Interior Rogers C. B. Morton led the parade of department officials who flocked to the scene of the disaster. Morton expressed his sympathy to relatives of the trapped miners and commented to reporters that, ”Yes, sir, this has certainly been considered a safe mine.”

While the Granite Mountain / Speculator Mine Fire was the worst disaster in metal mining history, the rescue mission was a remarkable accomplishment. Rescue crews succeeded in searching over 30 miles of drifts and crosscuts, and at least 15 miles of stopes, raises, and manways. Townspeople turned out in droves to help in whatever way possible.
