In our multicultural society, folk dance embraces, among others, the Anglo-American square dance, Native American fancy dance, Spanish fandango, Latin salsa, Irish jig, Bohemian polka, Scottish highland fling, African American hip-hop, and English Morris dance.

”The term ”folk dance” as used here does not refer to ”popular dance” or to ”revivals” but rather to ”authentic” folk dance as a folk art which has been handed down through the years, from generation to generation, in a manner corresponding to ”oral transmission” in the case of folk song, eventually becoming an established tradition of a people.

Folk dance, generally, a type of dance that is a vernacular, usually recreational, expression of a historical or contemporary culture. The term ‘folk dance’ was accepted until the mid-20th century. Then this and other categories of dance were questioned and their distinctions became subject to debate.

Folk dances are usually danced at social gatherings (which can be formed spontaneously or during yearly celebrations) that can but are not required to have a particular dancing stage and are almost always so simple to dance that new dancers and amateurs are encouraged to start dancing with everyone else.

From the onset of American history, folk music has shown up at times when the people needed it most. The earliest folk songs rose from slave fields as spirituals such as “Down by the Riverside” and “We Shall Overcome.” These are songs about struggle and hardship but are also full of hope.
